It activates the small Gunmen he finds, which Kamina names Lagann, and its drilling-based abilities allow Simon to destroy a larger Gunmen and break through the ceiling to the surface. The Core Drill reacts to Simon's Spiral energy, enabling Lagann to produce drills from its body and combine with Kamina's Gunmen, Gurren, to form Gurren Lagann.

The Core Drill is first found by Simon, a meek young digger, while he expands his home deeper underground. It is a drill-shaped key that activates the small Gunmen Lagann, which Kamina names. Using the Core Drill, Simon powers Lagann's drilling-based abilities to destroy a giant Gunmen attacking Giha village and break through the ceiling, allowing him and Kamina to reach the surface. Throughout the series, the Core Drill responds to Simon's Spiral energy, allowing Lagann to produce drills from its body and combine with Gurren to form Gurren Lagann. In the final battle against Lordgenome, Simon uses his Core Drill to defeat him for good after fighting him with his bare hands. Twenty years after defeating the Anti-Spirals, Simon hands his Core Drill over to Gimmy and leaves his friends to wander the planet as a nameless vagrant, stating that his destiny was merely to 'dig the tunnel to the future.'

Deep within the underground village of Giha, Simon, a meek young digger conscripted to expand his home, unearths a drill-shaped key called a Core Drill. Soon after, he finds a small Gunmen. When a giant Gunmen crashes through the ceiling and attacks the village, Simon uses his Core Drill to activate the smaller Gunmen, which Kamina names Lagann. Its drilling-based abilities allow Simon to destroy the more prominent Gunmen and break through the ceiling, enabling him and Kamina to reach the surface world. Later, Kamina hijacks a Gunmen and names it Gurren, combining it with Lagann to form Gurren Lagann. In the final battle against Lordgenome, Simon fights him with his bare hands until he uses his Core Drill to defeat him for good. After the Anti-Spirals are destroyed, Simon hands his Core Drill over to Gimmy and leaves his friends, stating his destiny was merely to 'dig the tunnel to the future.'
