Nia is introduced as Lordgenome's daughter, having lived a sheltered life in his palace. However, she is not his biological daughter; she was created by the Anti-Spirals and posed as such. She is unaware of the war between humans and Lordgenome until Lordgenome abandons her and Simon discovers her in Episode 15. Her polite, naive, and curious nature helps soothe Simon after Kamina's death—though Simon's depression is resolved in Episode 8, before Nia appears. The two fall in love and become engaged in Episode 22. Later, she is revealed to be an agent of the Anti-Spirals, who created her and use her as their messenger. During this time, she is controlled by the Anti-Spirals, giving her an emotionless and robotic personality—there is no separate personality called 'Mess'. Nia fades away after Simon destroys the Anti-Spirals, as her existence was dependent on them.

In Their Own Story

Seven years after Lordgenome's defeat, mankind prospers on the surface. When the human population reaches one million, an alien race called the Anti-Spirals emerges and uses Nia as their messenger because the Anti-Spirals created her. They have sent the Moon on a collision course with the Earth to wipe out the planet's life and prevent the Spiral Nemesis. Simon and Team Dai-Gurren retrieve the real Moon from the pocket dimension the Anti-Spirals had hidden it in and go to their homeworld. They rescue Nia, and in a one-on-one Gunmen battle across the universe, Simon and Lagann destroy the Anti-Spirals. However, this causes Nia to fade away, as her existence is tied to that of the Anti-Spirals.

After Kamina's death, Simon sinks into depression until he meets Nia, who helps him come to terms with Kamina's death. The rest of Team Dai-Gurren prompt him to become the team's leader, leading them to Lordgenome's palace. Seven years later, Simon serves as part of the world's government in Kamina City. After the Anti-Spirals are defeated, Simon hands his Core Drill over to Gimmy and leaves his friends to wander the planet as a nameless vagrant, stating that his destiny was merely to 'dig the tunnel to the future.'

Kamina's Charismatic Leadership and Sacrifice

Kamina is a rebellious youth from Giha village who dreams of leaving his underground home and going to the surface world. His passionate and confident personality serves as a foil for the more timid Simon. He is known for wearing sunglasses and a tattered cape that belonged to his late father, and wields a nodachi he stole from the chief of Giha village. His catchphrase 'just who the hell do you think I/we am/are?!' becomes the battle cry of his group. He founds Team Gurren, later renaming it Team Dai-Gurren, and acts as its leader to combat Lordgenome and the beastmen. One of Lordgenome's four generals kills Kamina in battle, but his actions are greatly influential throughout the series.
